Mineko Iwasaki is a formidable woman and her achievements are extraordinary. It was time to read a non-fiction portrayal.

Very readable, autobiographical-style account of what it was like to be a geisha in the decades following World War II.

It was really a very fascinating account of a significant part of Japanese culture that developed and preserved itself for such a long time. I would love to have read more about how Mineko challenged the system like she claims she did, but never s Yeeah Three and a half stars.

I want you to know what it is really like to live the life of a geisha, a life filled with extraordinary professional demands and richly glorious rewards. I came to really like Iwasaki – she seemed honest about the blessings and shortcomings of life in Gion Kobu.

I found this to be a very well written memoir about the time spent in the flower and willow world by a prominent geisha of her time. When she is sitting next to Queen Elizabeth II at a dinner Iwasaki notices that mijeko doesn’t touch her dinner: They write the tallies down on slips of paper that they place in a box in the entryway of the ochaya. For example, she tries to kill herself as a young girl, and the description plus the emotional turmoil she was feeling took up all of three sentences.
