Since the exotics are otherwise extremely difficult to kill, lowlife humans take advantage of this weakness once it is discovered. I still like the series mzy am less enamored with May than I was after the first reading. Lots of subplots to keep your eyes on, but I think May does a nice job of keeping them all grounded in the main action of the book. They have control circuitry like that found in the silver torcs.
The Firvulag exotics are, in the main, more robust than the Tanu and are less affected by the higher levels of radiation on earth.
They are all upstaged by the actions of Felice, who causes an earthquake which breaches the straits of Gibraltar and floods the Mediterranean with water from the Atlantic the Mediterranean being a series of salt juliaj marshes and lagoons at around this period, apparentlysweeping away the city of Muriah where the battle is taking place.

The Howlers are essentially a peace-loving people, and have long been spiritual, if not actual, allies with the Peace Faction amongst the Tanu, who are also opposed to the battle-religion practiced by the Tanu and Firvulag.
